Nick Pivetta was just another guy for years. He struck out 8.77 batters per nine innings across 33 very mediocre starts in 2022, and he was off to a similar showing to begin his 2023 campaign. However, everything changed when the Boston Red Sox shifted him to the bullpen.
Pivetta was dominant following that move, and he seemingly applied those changes he made when Boston stretched him out to become a starter once again. He finished last season with a career-best 11.54 K/9 and struck out 10 Seattle Mariners hitters in his first start of 2024.
Helping Pivetta on Wednesday is the fact that the Oakland Athletics are a joke. They struck out at the fourth-highest rate in 2023 (25.1%) and have follow ed that up with the second-worst percentage (29.8) through six games this campaign.

Carlos Rodon's time with the New York Yankees has been an unmitigated disaster. He spent the majority of the 2023 season on the injured list after initially only being expected to miss the first month. And he's been terrible when healthy.
Rodon finished 2023 with only 8.95 K/9, and he struck out just four batters across 4 1/3 innings during his first start of 2024, driving up his pitch count while allowing five hits to go along with three walks.
Rodon faces a tough Arizona Diamondbacks lineup that strikes out at a very low rate on Wednesday. Arizona hitters have been punched out at the lowest percentage in the league during 2024 (15.6) after managing the fourth-best rate in 2023.
