The day rolls on, and we're treated to some afternoon baseball in The Bay as the San Francisco Giants host the San Diego Padres at 4:35 p.m. ET from Oracle Park.

Pittsburgh Pirates rookie Jared Jones annihilated the Miami Marlins in his major-league debut. He racked up an outrageous 10 punchouts over 5 2/3, limiting the Marlins to just three hits. Striking out opposing hitters in bunches isn't new to the right-hander, as he averaged around 10 K/9 across three minor-league levels in 2022 and 2023.
However, Jones gets the stiffest test of his young career on Friday when he takes on the Baltimore Orioles. Not only do the Orioles offer a deadly combination of power and speed, but they also don't strike out very often. Baltimore was just around league average last year in terms of strikeout rate, but it's really improved in that regard this season. The Orio les' 19.2% K rate ranks sixth-best through the first week of action.

Erick Fedde shocked many when he struck out seven Detroit Tigers hitters in his first start of the season. The most impressive part was that he did it over just 4 2/3 innings. The last time we saw Fedde in the majors, he averaged just 6.66 K/9 with the Washington Nationals. However, the right-hander spent last season with the NC Dinos of the KBO, with whom he managed 10.43 K/9 across 180 1/3 very impressive innings.
Fedde squares off against another division rival in his second start this season, this time against the Kansas City Royals. The Royals are more stingy than the Tigers when it comes to strikeouts, hovering closer to the middle of the pack in 2023 and owning the 10th-best K% through the first week this se ason.

Milwaukee Brewers right-hander Freddy Peralta is among the early contenders by the MLB Cy Young odds, and he looked the part in his season debut. Peralta struck out eight New York Mets over six one-hit innings, and that's nearly in line with the 11.41 K/9 he managed in 2023.
On Friday, Peralta faces a Seattle Mariners team that's struggled to avoid the dreaded walk of shame back to the dugout. Seattle struck out at the second-highest rate last season and has the worst mark this campaign at 30.2%. The World Series odds contenders are hitting just .196 as a team through seven games.
However, we're still seeing value on the Under for Peralta based on his projections and these generous plu s-money odds at DraftKings. Peralta is projected to record just 6.8 punchouts on Friday, providing us with nearly 32% +EV on this bet.
