A big theme of the day is high-profile matchups between teams in first and second-place within the same division – each of them hoping to climb the World Series odds.

I cover two of those matchups in today's MLB player prop bets, as the Kansas City Royals look to stop a five-game losing streak with a home meeting against the Cleveland Guardians.

Burnes has pitched nothing like an ace of late. He began August with 22 runs allowed through his first four starts, the most runs he allowed in any four-game span in his career.

He followed that up with six runs allowed against the Dodgers in his last start, and while one of those were earned, he still took the loss for a third straight start. However, Burnes has faced four top-13 offenses this month, while a meeting with the MLB-worst White Sox should be the perfect remedy for his struggles.

Michael Wacha has gone 11 consecutive starts without a loss, and has seven wins in that span. The Royals are 9-2 in those 11 starts.

In his lone home start against the Guardians, he held them to one run in 5 1/3 innings while using his changeup as a weapon (he induced seven whiffs on 19 swings). And even in the 7-5 loss in his last time out against Cleveland, Kansas City held a 5-2 lead after six innings, and just made the mistake of leaving Wacha in too long. 

I'm risking $10 for Wacha to record the win with the hopes of turning that into a $17 profit.

Arizona has scored 47 more runs than any other team in the majors, and its offense has been especially hot lately, with 94 runs scored over its last 21 games.

Leadoff hitter Corbin Carroll entered Sunday as the igniter for that recent stretch of success, especially over the last week, when he tied for the team-lead in runs scored (six) and had a .348/.346/1.043 slash line.

Carroll has three hits, all extra-base hits, in 10 at-bats against Jack Flaherty, and Flaherty has allowed a combined .318 on-base percentage and .870 OPS in 121 at-bats against current Diamondbacks hitters.

The Chicago Cubs entered Sunday with 85 runs scored in their previous nine games.

That was Chicago's most runs scored in a nine-game span since 1935, and just the fourth time it had scored 85-plus runs in a nine-game span since 1900, per MLB's Sarah Langs. And what did they do for an encore? Chicago's 14 runs on Sunday brought it to 99 runs scored in its last 10 games, the franchise's second-most since 1900. 

Seiya Suzuki had been at the forefront of the Cubs' offensive explosion, as he slashed .364/.444/.636 with three home runs and eight runs batted in over the last 15 days.

He faces Pittsburgh Pirates righty Jared Jones, whose slugging and OPS allowed to right-handed batters versus lefties are 29 and 43 points higher, respectively.
