It’s an interconference matchup on the ice as a pair of teams searching for two points do battle in the Garden State. The Minnesota Wild are on the road as they make the trip to take on the New Jersey Devils Sunday afternoon. Minnesota fell 3-2 in a shootout against the Capitals on the road Friday night in their previous contest. New Jersey outgunned Buffalo 5-4 at home Friday night in their previous matchup. In the last 10 meetings between the teams, the Wild own a commanding 7-1-2 advantage and have won the last five meetings. That includes a 2-1 overtime win on the road in the most recent matchup on March 21, 2023.

Minnesota battled and earned one point in their game with Washington only to find themselves stonewalled in the shootout, depriving them of the second point. The Wild dropped to 3-3-2 and stand tied for third in the Central Division, leaving them four points behind the Avalanche for the top spot in the division. Minnesota entered Saturday tied for 10th in goals per game this season as they put up an average of 3.63 goals a night. The Wild are 31st in goals against as they have allowed 4.13 goals per contest this season. Minnesota is 22nd in power play success as they have converted 13.3% of their chances with the man advantage this season. The Wild stands tied for 28th in penalty killing as they have successfully worked through 72% of their shorthanded situations on the year.

Against Washington, both teams had their chances but ultimately, Minnesota fell s hort in the shootout. The Wild held a 13-8 advantage in shots in the opening period but skated off trailing 2-1 after 20 minutes of play. Marco Rossi opened the scoring with his third goal of the season at 2:17 off assists from Marcus Foligno and Marcus Johansson. The Wild gave up two straight goals to find themselves down at the first intermission. In the second period, Minnesota held an 8-6 shot edge with neither team lighting the lamp, keeping the game 2-1 in favor of the Capitals after 40 minutes. The third period saw the Wild outshot 18-15 but they scored the lone goal of the period to tie the game. Ryan Hartman knotted the game with his fifth goal of the season, unassisted, at the 1:16 mark. In overtime, Minnesota held a 5-1 edge in shots on goal with neither side lighting the lamp, sending things on to the shootout. During the shootout, the Wild were blanked in seven straight rounds while John Carlson lit the lamp for the Capitals to send Minnesota to the loss. Marc-Andre Fle ury made 31 saves for the Wild, who held a 41-33 shot advantage, in the loss. Filip Gustavsson is expected to be between the pipes here.
