It’s the conference opener for a pair of teams from Conference USA on the gridiron down in the Bluegrass State. The Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders are on the road as they travel to face the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers Thursday night. Middle Tennessee comes in off a 31-23 home loss to Colorado State in their previous game Saturday, losing outright as a four-point favorite. Western Kentucky fell 27-24 on the road at Troy in their previous game Saturday, though they covered the line as a 3.5-point underdog. In the all-time series between the schools, the Hilltoppers own a 36-35-1 advantage and have won the last four matchups. That includes a 35-17 road victory in the most recent meeting on October 15, 2022.

Middle Tennessee couldn’t build off their win over Murray State as they were upended at home by Colorado State in their previous game last week. The Blue Raiders fell to 1-3 on the season and look to open conference play with a victory here. Against Colorado State, Middle Tennessee led 17-10 at the half before giving up 21 unanswered points to trail 31-17 with 11:19 to play and couldn’t get closer than eight the rest of the way. The Blue Raiders held a 430-378 edge in total offense, rolled up a 26-18 edge in first downs and owned a 33:57 to 26:03 advantage in time of possession yet lost. Middle Tennessee turned the ball over twice, including a scoop-six, and had an extra point blocked, to offset forcing one takeaway in the game.

On the season, the Blue Raiders are tied for 79th in the FBS in passing offense as they average 230.5 yards per game through the air. Middle Tenness ee stands just 98th among the 133 FBS teams to play so far this season in rushing offense as they average 128 yards per game on the ground. The Blue Raiders are 111th in scoring offense with an average of 21 points per game. Middle Tennessee struggles defensively as well, ranking 109th in scoring defense by allowing 31 points per contest. Nicholas Vattiato is 101 of 143 passing for 916 yards with seven touchdowns and two interceptions this season. Jaiden Credle leads the team on the ground with 30 carries for 188 yards and a score this season. Frank Peasant (26 carries, 89 yards) and Jekail Middlebrook (18 carries, 85 yards, two TD) are also in the mix on the ground. Elijah Metcalf leads the team in receptions as he has haul ed in 22 balls for 192 yards and a score. Holden Willis (13 catches, 142 yards, TD), Jeremy Tate Jr. (nine grabs, 129 yards, TD), Justin Olson (11 receptions, 123 yards, TD) and Javonte Sherman (eight catches, 81 yards) each are over 75 receiving yards on the season. Zeke Rankin is 10 of 11 on extra point attempts and two of four on field goal attempts with a long of 31 this season.
