A pair of National League teams open up the first full week after the All-Star break with a series on the diamond in the Gateway City. The Miami Marlins are on the road as they kick off a three-game series with the St. Louis Cardinals Monday night. Miami closed a three-game series on the road against Baltimore Sunday afternoon hoping to avoid a sweep. The Marlins were beaten 6-5 in the middle game of the set Saturday. St. Louis played the rubber game of a three-game set with the Nationals Sunday afternoon at home. The Cardinals bounced back after losing the completion of Friday’s suspended game 7-5 in 10 innings by winning 9-6 in Saturday’s regularly scheduled contest. In the first series between the teams this season, the Marlins took three of four at home July 3-6.

Miami lost for the fourth time in six games as they let a four-run lead slip away in Saturday’s game against the Orioles. The Marlins entered Sunday 53-41 and stood second in the NL East, 9.5 games behind Atlanta for the top spot in the division. They did hold the top wild card spot in the National League standings. On Saturday, Miami got four hits from Luis Arraez (RBI), who saw his average climb to .386, while Jean Segura (run, RBI) added three in the loss. The Marlins went just three of 15 with runners in scoring position in the loss. Braxton Garrett didn’t factor in the decision as he threw 4.2 innings, allowing four runs on six hits with one walk and five strikeouts. Huascar Brazoban (3-2) took the loss in relief as he allowed two runs on four hits with no walks or strikeouts in two-thirds of an inning of work.
Jesus Luzardo is expected to take the ball for Miami in this contest a s he makes his 20th start of the season. He comes in 8-5 with a 3.29 ERA, a 1.134 WHIP, 27 walks and 129 strikeouts over 109.1 innings of work this year. Luzardo earned the win in his last start, which came against the Phillies at home July 9. He threw 6.1 innings, allowing two runs on four hits with one walk and nine strikeouts in a game the Marlins went on to win 7-3. In his last three starts, Luzardo is 2-0 with a 0.96 ERA, a 0.86 WHIP, four walks and 26 strikeouts over 18.2 innings of work. Luzardo makes his third career start against the Cardinals in this contest. He is 1-1 with a 3.48 ERA, a 1.548 WHIP, four walks and 11 strikeouts over 10.1 innings of work against them. Luzardo, in his 81st career major league appearance and 65th start, pitches at Busch Stadium for the first time here.
