Miami Marlins vs. Cleveland Guardians Prediction, Preview, and Odds – 4-23-2023

The Miami Marlins are slated to close out a three-game series with the Cleveland Guardians Sunday afternoon. These teams were slated to open the series Friday night but had the game postponed due to inclement weather. That set up a doubleheader scheduled for Saturday but rain has held up the first pitch of the opening game as of the time this article was published. Miami fell 5-2 in 11 innings in the finale of their three-game set with the Giants Wednesday afternoon in their most recent game, thanks to Friday’s rainout. The Marlins entered Saturday 10-9 on the year and stood third in the NL East, 3.5 games behind the Braves for the division lead. In that game Wednesday, Miami finished with 10 hits while Garrett Hampson (run) was the lone player with two in the game. The Marlins went just two for 16 with runners in scoring position in the loss and left 15 men on base. Trevor Rogers started but didn’t factor in the decision as he threw three innings, allowing one run on three hits with one walk and three strikeouts. Devin Smeltzer (0-1) took the loss as he allowed four runs (three earned) on three hits with no walks and one strikeout in one inning of relief.

Jesus Luzardo is expected to take the ball for Miami in this contest as he makes his fifth start of the season. He comes in 2-0 with a 2.74 ERA, a 1.261 WHIP, eight walks and 26 strikeouts over 23 innings of work this year. Luzardo didn’t factor in the decision in his last start, which came against the Giants at home Monday. He threw 4.1 innings, allowing three runs on six hits with two walks and six strikeouts in a game the Marlins went on to win 4-3. In his last three starts, Luzardo is 1-0 with a 3.63 ERA, a 1.33 WHIP, four walks and 21 strikeouts over 17 innings of work. Luzardo, in his 66th career major league appearance and 50th start, pitches against the Guardians for the first time here. As a result, this marks his first career outing at Progressive Field.
