It’s an interconference tilt on the parquet floor as a pair of teams that made the postseason a year ago collide in the Land of 10,000 Lakes. The Miami Heat are on the road as they make the trip westward to take on the Minnesota Timberwolves Saturday night. Miami comes in off a 103-102 home win over the Pistons Wednesday night, though they failed to cover the line as a 9.5-point favorite in the contest. They were in action against Boston Friday night in the front half of a back-to-back set. Minnesota battled but came up a 97-94 loser on the road to the Raptors Wednesday night in their season opener, failing to cover the line as a one-point underdog. In the all-time regular season series between the teams, the Heat own a 35-31 advantage. Last season, the teams split two meetings with Miami claiming a 113-110 home win in the most recent matchup on December 26, 2022.

Miami is the defending Eastern Conference champ but they looked a bit out of sync for long stretches in their season opener against the Pistons. The Heat did manage to earn the win but it was a less than inspiring performance by coach Erik Spoelstra’s team. Against Detroit, Miami trailed by three after the opening quarter before outscoring the Pistons 32-18 in the second quarter to take an 11-point lead at halftime. The Heat led by eight after three quarters and extended to a 94-75 advantage with 9:25 remaining only to nearly let it slip away. Miami was outscored 27-9 the rest of the way but hung on as the teams went scoreless over the final 1:44 after Cade Cunningham hit a three-pointer to narrow the margin to one.

In the game, Miami shot only 40.2% from the field, including eight of 22 from three-point range, and lost the rebounding battle by a 56-48 margin in the contest. Bam Adebayo led t he Heat with 22 points and eight rebounds in the victory as one of five players in double figures. Jimmy Butler contributed 19 points plus 13 rebounds though he shot only six of 18 from the field in the game. Tyler Herro contributed 16 points plus three steals, Duncan Robinson chipped in 15 off the bench and Kevin Love posted a double-double with 13 points along with 10 rebounds in the win. Shooting was an issue early as Herro was seven of 24 while Caleb Martin went one of seven. The Heat needs to get some production from Kyle Lowry, who, despite playing 32 minutes, went scoreless and took only one shot from the floor in the contest.

Josh Richardson (foot) was slated to miss Friday’s game so it’s unlikely he takes the floor here. Haywood Highsmith (knee) is expected to be out until mid-November.
