Massachusetts (UMASS) vs. Toledo Prediction, Preview, and Odds – 9-10-2022

The UMass Minutemen football team travel to Ohio to take on the Toledo Rockets on Saturday in the College Football Hall of Fame game. UMass (0-1), after a brief flirtation with becoming a member of the MAC, has been an independent since 2016. They will battle Toledo (1-0), a current member of the MAC, in the Glass Bowl  this weekend. The opening kickoff is scheduled for 7:00pm EST.

UMass' football season got off to a slow start on Saturday night as the Minutemen were trounced by Tulane, 42-10 in Tulane. The opener was not a welcome sign for a team coming off of a 1-11 season in 2021. UMass had just 217 total yards of offense on the evening. Junior quarterback Gino Campiotti went just two-for-six for 12 yards passing but did score the Minutemen's only touchdown, his first with the team, on a four-yard scamper in the second quarter. On the night, he carried the ball 17 times for 58 yards rushing. Running back Tim Baldwin Jr. led UMass with 65 yards on just 13 carries. UMass trailed 21-10 at the half but a 21-0 3rd quarter in favor of Tulane did in the Minutemen. Campiotti threw two interceptions on the night and his backup, Brady Olson, threw one as well.

Defensively, there were very few bright spots for the Minutemen. UMass allowed nearly 400 yards of total offense including 196 rushing yards to Tulane. They allowed five yards per carry four rushing touchdowns in the one-sided affair. The UMass defense had just one tackle for loss on the night, no interceptions and no sacks. Jalen Mackie was the leading tackler with nine for the Minutemen. UMass allowed Tulane to convert on 3-of-8 third down attempts on the night.
