Needing a win to get back on track, the Marshall Thundering Herd used an opening 12-0 run to get back in the win column with a big 74-69 road win over Ohio University on Saturday night. The win wasn't without difficulty as Ohio rallied back to take a seven point lead with just over two minutes left in the game. The Herd answered back with three straight 3-point field goals and put the game away with free throws down the stretch. Kevon Voyles and Obinna Anochili-Killen each had 18 points in the game to lead the Herd.
“It's still not where we need to be, (but) the kids played hard, they're trying and they want to win,” Herd men's basketball head coach Dan D'Antoni said after the victory. “They keep that spirit, and we keep going game to game better, (it'll get better). I hope it feels better from the fan base. I know from the coaching end it feels a lot better, and when I walked into that locker room the kids were happy. It's a heck of a lot better two-and-a-half-hour bus ride back to Huntington doing it this way.”
Marshall has not been particularly sharp on either end of the floor this season. The Herd ranks 153rd in the country in points per game thus far. They are 293rd in field goal percentage and just 335th in 3-point field goal percentage. They are slightly below average in efficienty, ranked 205th in the country in assist-to-turnover ratio. On the defensive end, the Herd ranks just 315th in the nation in points allowed per game. They are 200th in field goal percentage on the defensive end and 259th in 3-point defense. Marshall does get after it on the glass, ranking 32nd in total rebounding in the country.
