Makinen: NHL post-Christmas handicapping based on early season trends
Makinen: NHL post-Christmas handicapping based on early season trends

It can be argued that the NHL season is split into four parts—the early season which leads into the Christmas break, the short period between the holiday and the All-Star break, the second half push to the playoffs, and the postseason. At this point, most teams have played a little over 30 games, so we know plenty about them regarding their strengths, weaknesses, and tendencies. This article focuses on the scheduling areas where teams have thrived or struggled in the early part of the season and using those definitive performance angles to project upcoming scheduling opportunities in which we can take advantage.

You’ll see that I have pulled out 15 of the top season scheduling performance angles that teams have put up so far in the 2022-23 season, including the angle and the average score, I’ve offered my thoughts on the trend along with the upcoming games in which the angle will apply. Following that, I’ve included all of the schedule situational records that former readers of the Point Spread Weekly were accustomed to seeing on the NHL Team Report. I’ll try to make this a regular occurrence for the rest of the season.

15 Top NHL Scheduling Performance Angles for 2022-23 season

Anaheim is 0-5-0 for $-500 on 0 days rest. Average Score: 1.6-5.0

Steve’s thoughts: The Ducks have struggled in a variety of situations so far, but when playing on the second of back-to-back days, the results have been downright ugly, as they’ve been outscored by 3.4 GPG on average. The next opportunity to fade Anaheim on this angle comes January 17th at Philadelphia.

Arizona is 10-8-2 for $1330 in non-conference games, Average Score:  3.1-3.4

Steve’s thoughts: Not much has gone right for the Coyotes this season, but they have fared well and produced a bunch of profits for backers when facing Eastern Conference teams. Arizona will face four straight teams from the East starting Thursday at home against Toronto.

Boston is 18-0-2 for $1375 at home, Average Score: 4.0-2.0

Steve’s thoughts: When I say the Bruins have been unbeatable at home this season, it is not a stretch. They essentially have been. Only two shootout losses on the docket in 18 games in Boston. The Bruins return home for a New Year’s Eve contest versus Buffalo.

Buffalo is 10-5 for $735 versus non-conference foes, Average Score:  4.2-3.1

Steve’s thoughts: Like Arizona, Buffalo is another team that can’t be satisfied with its early season play but has performed well in games versus the opposite conference. We will see this angle test next in a stretch of four straight games from 1/7-1/14.

Calgary is 11-7-6 for $-1340 in the one-day rest scheduling scenario, Average Score: 3.1-3.2

Steve’s thoughts: The single full-day-of-rest scenario is the most common on every team’s annual schedule, and unfortunately for Calgary, it’s been a point of struggle as bettors would be down over 13 units already had they backed the Flames in this spot so far. The upcoming schedule doesn’t feature any such opportunities, but there will be six straight games from 1/8-1/18.

Carolina is 6-0-0 for $600 on 0 days rest, Average Score:  4.7-2.8

Steve’s thoughts: Carolina currently leads the Metropolitan Division and one big reason for it is the ability to win all six of their games in what is usually considered the most difficult of scheduling spots, the second of back-to-back games. Next spot to back the Hurricanes in this situation? January 15th at home versus Vancouver.

New Jersey is 10-1-1 for $740 in non-conference action, Average Score:  3.3-2.1

Steve’s thoughts: The Devils have been one of the pleasant surprises in the early part of the NHL season, boasting a tremendous record on the road and against Western Conference foes, two areas where they struggled in the past. New Jersey will host St. Louis on January 5th.

NY Rangers are 8-6-4 for $-1115 at home this season, Average Score: 3.0-3.2

Steve’s thoughts: For whatever reason, the Rangers have played far better hockey on the road this season. Unfortunately for bettors, those who have backed them at home, under premium pricing, have shouldered the brunt of their losses. MSG has typically been a tough place for opponents to play. We’ll see if New York can get it turned around the rest of the way, starting Tuesday night versus Washington.

Philadelphia is 6-0-1 for $860 in the two-days rest scheduling scenario, Average Score: 3.0-1.4

Steve’s thoughts: The Flyers have actually lost more than 15 units for their backers in all other scheduling situations than this in 2022-23, so it’s obvious that a rested Philadelphia team is a better one. Unfortunately, the schedule doesn’t allow for many such opportunities. We will have a golden chance to take advantage of this scenario with Philly in four straight games between 1/5-1/14.

Pittsburgh is 10-1-2 for $535 on one-day rest, Average Score: 4.0-2.5

Steve’s thoughts: The Penguins have thrived in the most frequent scheduling situation on the annual schedule, going 10-1-2 so far. In all other games, they are 9-8-3, so it seems that they fare well on routine. On Friday 12/30, we’ll see if the Pens can keep the success going against the Devils.

San Jose is 10-2-1 OVER the total for $780 in divisional play, Average Score: 3.6-4.5

Steve’s thoughts: San Jose has played a bunch of high-scoring affairs versus Pacific Division rivals this season, with the 13 games on this trend producing over 8.0 GPG. This one gets tested early with a Tuesday night date versus Vancouver on tap.

St. Louis is 11-1-1 OVER the total versus Eastern Conference foes, Average Score: 3.4-4.8

Steve’s thoughts: Like San Jose, the Blues have also played in a specific set of games producing over 8.0 GPG, in this case against the opposite conference. The first two games versus the East out of the break for St Louis are against defensively stout Toronto on 12/27 and 1/3, so this totals trend will be tested.

Tampa Bay is 11-1-1 for $870 on one-day rest, Average Score: 4.2-2.4

Steve’s thoughts: This is usually the case for the Lightning, who tend to thrive under routine. We are well-familiar with their recent postseason success, and the playoff schedule is dominated by games with a full day of rest between. If this trend holds up for the rest of the 2022-23 schedule, I expect Tampa to make another deep postseason run. The first opportunity to back the Lightning in this spot out of the break comes Saturday against Arizona, but you’ll have to pay a high price.

Vancouver is 10-2-0 for $1025 versus divisional opponents, Average Score: 4.8-3.4

Steve’s thoughts: Vancouver is two games under.500 overall, so it’s pretty clear that the Canucks find some extra motivation for beating divisional foes. Their season would be a total wreck without the success they’ve had against Pacific rivals. Two of Vancouver’s first three opponents out of the break are San Jose and Calgary.

Vegas is 14-2-1 for $1165 in road games, Average Score: 4.2-3.0

Steve’s thoughts: For as much as its been disappointing for Vegas fans to see their team go just 10-9-0 at home so far, the Golden Knights have more than made up for it with their incredible road success. This is obviously a change from their first couple of seasons, and it’s probably caught a lot of bettors off guard. Out of the break, Vegas will start with back-to-back games at Los Angeles and Anaheim on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Here are the current records and stats in various scheduling situations for all 32 NHL teams as we head out of the Christmas break with games on Tuesday, December 27th.
