Maine Sports Betting Revenue Tops  Million For January

The Maine Gambling Control Unit reported close to $5.6 million in gross sports betting revenue for January on Wednesday as both DraftKings and Caesars Sportsbook improved on their December totals.

Sports betting handle, however, ticked down 14.3% to $38.1 million in the second full month of betting in the Pine Tree State, a difference of roughly $6.4 million. The two mobile sports betting apps, which had a combined 14.6% hold for the first month of the year, have accepted more than $120.2 million worth of bets since launching in early November.

The state was able to levy taxes on nearly $5.5 million worth of adjusted gross revenue, resulting in an inflow of $546,149 into state coffers. Maine has collected more than $1.4 million in taxes from sports wagering thus far.

DraftKings gets lion’s share of action

DraftKings outperformed Caesars by a ratio of greater than 5-to-1 for handle in January, accepting close to $32.1 million worth of wagers compared to the nearly $6.1 million by Caesars. While both saw month-over-month declines in handle, DraftKings was down only 9.4% compared to the nearly one-third for Caesars.
