Loyola of Chicago is looking for a bounce-back season in 2023-24 after struggling through their first season in the Atlantic Ten last season. The Ramblers went just 10-21 last season and were a far cry from the team that was a tournament darling in previous seasons. On Saturday afternoon, the Ramblers improved their record to 2-2 with a 73-70 home win over New Orleans. They were led by Dame Adelekun's double-double in the victory. Adelekun had 22 points on 6-of-9 shooting and 11 rebounds. Des Watson also had a strong game with 19 points to even the Ramblers' record on the season. Loyola of Chicago shot 43% from the floor and outrebounded New Orleans 47-37.
“You've got to find ways to win, and it's not always going to be pretty,” said head coach Drew Valentine. “Especially being down personnel who have a big impact on what we envision for this team's success. I thought on a short turn around, the gu ys did a good job stepping up. Dame will continue to blossom and create a cool inside duo with Phil when we get him back.”
Loyola-Chicago hopes to make a run at getting back to the NCAA Tournament and that will begin with more quality wins this season. They have a chance to get just that on Wednesday against Creighton. Loyola comes into this matchup 178th in the nation in points per game thus far. They are 153rd in field goal percentage and 174th in 3-point shooting. Defensively, they are 149th in points allowed per game and an impressive 68th in opponent's field goal percentage. They have not been great with perimeter defense, however, ranking just 297th in 3-point defense. The Ramblers are also just 235th in the nation in turnovers.
