The long road back to respectability for Louisville continues as the team enters ACC play. After suffering through a miserable 2022-23 campaign that saw Louisville finish 2-18 in ACC play, even a small improvement would be a step in the right direction. They are 0-1 in ACC play after losing to Virginia Tech on the road but are coming into this game after a tough matchup with in-state rival and the 9th-ranked Kentucky Wildcats on the Thursday prior to Christmas Break. Despite a strong showing by Skyy Clarke, who finished with 20 points and five assists, the Cardinals couldn't maintain a strong first half start and fell 95-75 to the Wildcats.
“First of all, we played a team that is ranked No. 9 but I think they are a lot better than No. 9,” UofL head coach Kenny Payne said. “The reason they are a lot better than nine is they share the ball, they defend, they have players who pass the ball and ca n really shoot the ball – probably the best passing team that we have played. They are a machine that keeps coming at you and at you and at you. I thought for the first ten minutes we did a really good job. We affected them some. But as it wore on, we didn't quite keep it going. We stopped defending the way we should, and we didn't share the ball like we should have and that led to them making runs.”
The Cardinals are looking to get into the win column in the ACC and will try to do so against one of the better teams in the conference. Louisvile comes into this game in Virginia with the 135th ranked scoring offense in the nation. They are 252nd in the nation in field goal percentage and just 317th in 3-point field goal percentage. The Cards are not much better on the defensive end as a whole. They are 240th in the nation in scoring defense and 244th in opponent's field goal percentage. The Cardinals have been better on the perimeter, ranked 70th in 3-point defense. Louisville has been strong on the boards, ranked 74th in the nation in total rebounding per game. They are just 200th in turnovers per game this season.
