La Tech evened their record at 1-1 last Saturday with a 52-17 win over Stephen F Austin in the Bulldogs home opener. The game was briefly tied at 7 before the Bulldogs poured it on by scoring the game's next 45 points to give head coach Sonny Cumbie his first career victory as the Bulldogs' head coach. Cumbie deflected the praise after the game towards his players:

“That’s why it’s exciting,” Cumbie said. “It’s because you want young kids to have success, and they were able to have success tonight.”

La Tech's ground game told the story in this game. The Bulldogs rumbled for 299 yards on the ground led by running back Marquis Crosby, who had 198 yards in 16 carries for two TDs. Quarterback Parker McNeil got the start and finished 11-of-22 with 197 yards for three TDs and an interception, all in the first half. The Bulldogs two backup qu arterbacks each got some time in the second half of the blowout win. Tre Harris was the leading receiver with five catches for 91 yards and a score.

The Bulldogs defense stepped up one week after allowing 52 points to Missouri. They forced three turnovers on the day and held Stephen F Austin to just 4-of-15 on third-down conversions. La Tech led the time of possession battle with a 30:21 to a 28:03 edge. The Bulldogs also kept it clean with just three penalties in the game compared with 10 for Stephen F Austin. The Bulldogs also had two sacks in the runaway win.
