It’s a clash between National League teams on opposite sides of the playoff cut line as they kick off a weekend set in the nation’s capital on the diamond. The Los Angeles Dodgers are on the road as they open up a three-game series with the Washington Nationals Friday night. Los Angeles closed a three-game set on the road with the Marlins Thursday evening hoping to avoid a sweep. The Dodgers were beaten 11-4 in the middle game of the set Wednesday night in their previous contest. Washington split a two-game home set with the Mets as they earned a 3-2 victory Wednesday night. In the first series between the teams this season, the Dodgers took two of three at home May 29-31.

Los Angeles dropped their second straight and fifth in their last six games as they were drubbed by the Marlins Wednesday night. The Dodgers entered Thursday 84-54 on the season and held a 13-game lead on the Diamondbacks for the top spot in the NL West. On Wednesday night, Los Angeles got three hits from Jason Heyward (two runs, RBI) and two from David Peralta (run) in the game. The problem for the Dodgers is that the rest of the team went a combined one for 25 in the game. Heyward (his 14th) and James Outman (his 18th) each homered in the loss for Los Angeles. Lance Lynn (10-11) took the loss as he was tagged for eight runs on seven hits with three walks and one strikeout in 4.2 innings of work.

Emmet Sheehan is on the hill for the Dodgers as he makes his 10th appearance and ninth start of the season in this contest. He is 3-1 with one save, a 5.31 ERA, a 1.299 WHI P, 21 walks and 36 strikeouts over 42.1 innings of work this season. Sheehan didn’t factor in the decision in his last start, which came against the Braves at home Saturday. He threw four innings, allowing one run on three hits with three walks and six strikeouts in a game the Dodgers lost 4-2 in 10 innings. In his last three appearances, two starts, Sheehan has no record with one save, a 2.08 ERA, a 0.92 WHIP, five walks and 14 strikeouts over 13 innings of work. Sheehan, in his 10th major league appearance and ninth start, pitches against the Nationals for the first time. As a result, this marks his first career outing at Nationals Park. Prior to being recalled, Sheehan was 4-2 with a 2.43 ERA, a 0.905 WHIP, 29 walks and 102 strikeouts over 63 innings in 15 appearances, 11 starts, split between Double-A Tulsa of the Texas League and Triple-A Albuquerque of the Pacific Coast League this season.
