Los Angeles Angels vs. Baltimore Orioles Prediction, Preview, and Odds – 5-15-2023

It’s the start of a series between a pair of American League teams on the diamond up in Charm City. The Los Angeles Angels are on the road as they open up a four-game series with the Baltimore Orioles Monday evening. Los Angeles played the rubber game of their three-game set on the road with the Guardians Sunday afternoon and ended up losing 4-3 to drop the series. Baltimore closed a three-game series at home against Pittsburgh Sunday afternoon looking for a sweep. The Orioles earned a 2-0 victory in the middle game of the series Saturday in their previous game. Last season, the Orioles won the season series 6-1, including a four-game sweep at home in the most recent series July 7-10, 2022.

Los Angeles was in action on the road against Cleveland Sunday afternoon and fell short in the rubber game for their sixth defeat in eight games. The Angels enter this game 21-20 on the season and stood second in the AL West, four games behind the Rangers for the division lead. On Sunday, Los Angeles got two hits from Taylor Ward (run, RBI) while the rest of the team was a combined three of 27 in the game. Gio Urshela and Shohei Ohtani knocked in the other runs in the loss. Patrick Sandoval (3-2) took the loss despite pitching well as he allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits with one walk and five strikeouts over 7.2 innings of work.

Shohei Ohtani is on the bump for the Angels in this contest as he makes his ninth start of the season. He is 4-1 with a 2.74 ERA, a 0.913 WHIP, 20 walks and an AL-leading 66 strikeouts. In addition, he leads the majors in wild pitches (eight) and hit batters (sev en) on the year. Ohtani took the loss in his last start, which came Tuesday at home against the Astros. He threw five innings, allowing three runs on six hits with two walks and seven strikeouts in a game the Angels dropped by a 3-1 score. In his last three starts, Ohtani is 1-1 with a 6.00 ERA, a 1.06 WHIP, five walks and 28 strikeouts over 18 innings of work. Ohtani didn’t factor in the decision in his lone career start against the Orioles, which came on August 25, 2021. He threw five innings, allowing four runs on five hits with no walks and seven strikeouts in a game the Angels eventually lost 10-6. That start came at Oriole Park at Camden Yards, giving Ohtani a little familiarity with the park as a pitcher: he has played nine games there as a hitter.
