Keep an eye on Oklahoma's futures odds following this sudden resignation

Oklahoma's longtime wide receivers coach Cale Gundy resigned suddenly on Sunday night in a statement on Twitter. Gundy said his resignation comes after an incident during a film session last week when he mistakenly read “one particular word that I should never – under any circumstance – have uttered.”

“Last week, during a film session, I instructed my players to take notes,” Gundy's statement reads. “I noticed a player was distracted and picked up his iPad and read aloud the words that were written on his screen. The words displayed had nothing to do with football. One particular word that I should never – under any circumstance – have uttered was displayed on that screen. In the moment, I did not even realize what I was reading and, as soon as I did, I was horrified.”

“I want to be very clear: The words that I read aloud from that screen were not my words,” the statement continues. “What I said was not malicious; it wasn't even intentional. Still, I am mature enough to know that the word I said was shameful and hurtful, no matter my intentions.”

Gund y is the brother of Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy.

L'Damian Washington, an offensive analyst, is set to replace Gundy on an interim basis. It is unclear as of now how this could affect Oklahoma's performance on the field or their odds for this season, but this news comes as shock and also comes very close to the start of the season. As Gundy mentioned in his statement, “I recognize this is a critical moment for Oklahoma football. This team — its coaches, players, administration and fans — do not deserve to be distracted by off-the-field matters while working to continue the tradition of excellence that makes me so proud to be a Sooner.” But it's tough to think this won't be a distraction on some level for the players as they will be performing under their new coach.

Oklahoma's consensus odds to win the national championship are +4300 and they are favored to win the Big 12 at +202 consensus odds. In their Week 1 matchup with UTEP, Oklahoma is the 32.5-point favorite with an over/under of 56.5 points. Certainly keep an eye on these odds as the season gets going after this news.
