Longest Super Bowl Droughts: 2024-25 Best Bets & Odds for Success-Starved NFL Teams

Being a loyal fan of an NFL team amid an extended Super Bowl drought can be as cruel as having to binge 24 hours of The Real Housewives once a week for 55 years. 

The 55-year duration wasn't chosen arbitrarily, as it will surely resonate with New York Jets fans, who have waited that long since Gang Green last won the Super Bowl.

Most Jets fans weren't alive when they upset the Baltimore Colts 16-7 in Super Bowl III.

Seven of the 20 teams that have won at least one Lombardi Trophy will enter the 2024-25 campaign with Super Bowl droughts of at least 28 years. 

Let's look at which of those fanbases, using the 2025 Super Bowl odds, has the best opportunity to end their barren Super Bowl stretch while offering the best bet that might actually cash at the end of the season for each success-starved team.

The Dallas Cowboys' off-field preparations for the forthcoming campaign have gone as well as Deshaun Watson's first two seasons with the Cleveland Browns.

Fans yearning for a morsel of encouragement after the Green Bay Packers stormed into AT&T Stadium and humiliated the Cowboys 48-32 in last season's NFC wild-card game have been let down yet again.  

CeeDee Lamb and Dak Prescott remain unsigned past the 2024-25 campaign. The former is a no-show at training camp while holding out until he receives an agreeable contract offer. 

NFL Network's Jane Slater says all is quiet on both contractual fronts.

Micah Parsons has two years remaining on his current deal, another contractual situation that ominously looms for the Cowboys, who have opted for the historically unsuccessful do-nothing, wait-and-see strategy. 

And then there's Mike McCarthy, who is entering the final year of his contract, reduced to being a lame-duck head coach. Tom Coughlin led the New York Giants to a Super Bowl triumph in the final year of his contract in 2008, the last lame-duck coach to do so. 

If the preseason is anything to go by, and unless things change quickly, Dallas' Super Bowl drought won't end in 2025.

49ers (29 years)

The San Francisco 49ers are built to win now. Well, they were built to win last year but ran into you know who in the Super Bowl. Led by Brock Purdy, among the 10 NFL MVP odds favorites, the 49ers are stacked at almost every position, representing arguably the league's most well-rounded team. 

While the Brandon Aiyuk conundrum is unwanted and potentially harmful, the 49ers have enough talent and depth to contend for Super Bowl glory whether he stays or goes.

Of course, the 49ers will require elite talent in return for Aiyuk if they grant the receiver's trade request.  

Akin to the Jim Harbaugh era, which included the 2013 Super Bowl loss to the Baltimore Ravens, the 49ers' winning window may no longer be agape if 2025 doesn't result in a Lombardi Trophy.

Commanders (32 years)

All hail the next Washington Commanders' saviour, Jayden Daniels. The Commanders will hope Daniels marks the end of the franchise's No. 2 draft pick curse. Look toward Robert Griffin III, who Washington picked second in the 2012 draft, as Exhibit A in that doom-and-gloom narrative.

The new ownership group, led by Josh Harris, is hellbent on fostering a new, inclusive, and winning culture. Dan Quinn was hired as the new head coach in February, the first of a rash of personnel moves. 

They signed center Tyler Biadasz and guard Nick Allegretti while upgrading the run game by signing Austin Ekeler, who had 915 rushing yards and 107 catches for 722 yards with the Los Angeles Chargers two years ago.

Tight end Zach Ertz was acquired to reinforce a position that has been inferior for several years.

And that's just on the offen sive side of the ball.  

While nobody, not even the most biased and delusional Commanders fans, expects a Super Bowl triumph in 2025, the Commanders are on the right path to returning to the promised land.

Bears (38 years)

Ranked by the Los Angeles Times as the ninth-most tortured fanbase, Chicago Bears' faithful are not only tired of losing but also of seeing an incessantly spinning, vomit-inducing quarterback carousel.

Bears' fans, who are also among SBR's angriest NFL fans, will hope No. 1 draft pick Caleb Williams puts an emphatic stop to the spinning. While it might take some time to ascend to superstar status, most pundits believe he will eventually get there. 

The Bears have provided Williams with an arsenal of formidable weapons to expedite his assimilation. He can deploy D'Andre Swift on the ground or turn aerially to DJ Moore, Keenan Allen, and ninth-overall pick Rome Odunze. 

Defensively, the Bears should be as good as last season, which improved substantially after enduring an abject start to the campaign. Chicago allowed 34.2 points per game in the first four weeks, co mpared to the 18.6 points in the subsequent 13 games.

The Bears finished last season with the No. 1 rushing defense, allowing 1,468 yards. It also ranked second in rushing touchdowns allowed (8), the second-fewest in the NFL, and fourth in yards per carry (3.8). 

It's a shame they're in one of the league's most difficult divisions.

Raiders (40 years)

The Las Vegas Raiders won two Super Bowls while the franchise was located in Oakland, Calif., and one during its time in Los Angeles. They won their last Super Bowl in Los Angeles three seasons after relocating from Oakland.  

The 2024-25 season will be the Raiders' sixth in Las Vegas, offering a new lease on life for many Silver and Black fanatics. Antonio Pierce, beloved and adored by Raiders players, will take the helm for his first full season as head coach.

While he brings enthusiasm, an unmatched work ethic, and the full support of his players, Pierce's Raiders are by no means the finished article.

Regardless of which quarterback wins the starting role – Gardner Minshew or Aidan O'Connell – the Raiders will be led by a slightly above-average signal-caller. It's like being offered a choice between streaming networks Hulu and Starz.< /p>

The success or failure of this team will be predicated on how elite its defense is. Led by All-Pro defensive end Maxx Crosby, the Raiders had the ninth-best scoring defense last season and won three of their final four contests. 

Christian Wilkins, who was added to the Raiders' defensive line the offseason, should mesh well with Crosby, further bolstering an already top-tier defense.  

While the Chiefs are out of reach, a second-place finish in the AFC West is more than feasible.

Dolphins (50 years)

The Miami Dolphins were arguably the most entertaining team in 2023-24. Who doesn't love seeing a team put up 70 points? That's a rhetorical question, particularly for Denver Broncos fans.

Unfortunately for Mike McDaniel and company, providing an entertaining product doesn't guarantee success. 

Miami was 1-6 last season, including the wild-card loss to the Chiefs, against fellow Super Bowl contenders. They beat up on inferior teams but fell to squads they'll need to overcome en route to a Super Bowl triumph. 

The Dolphins were average on the road (4-4) and enjoyed playing in the cold as much as surfers vibe with still and quiet water. In games with a temperature below 50 degrees at kickoff, the Dolphins are 15-43 over the last 20 years – 2-20 in their previous 22 games.

With too much to prove, too many elite teams to leapfro g, and insufficient indication they can make those substantial leaps, the Dolphins will again finish short of their ultimate goal.

Jets (55 years)

With no Super Bowl appearances since the third iteration of the showcase game, when Gang Green won their only Lombardi Trophy, the Jets are the definition of a cursed franchise.

The unrelenting anguish, disappointment, and heartbreak Jets fans endure make it easier to understand the reasoning behind those jumping on winning bandwagons, pledging their fleeting allegiance for an otherwise elusive shot at glory.

Hopes before last season were higher than in his prime Snoop Dogg.

With Aaron Rodgers seemingly fit as a fiddle entering training camp, a similar feeling pervaded before news of Haason Reddick's current holdout burst the optimism bubble. 

A story as old and well-known as the franchise's 55-year wait for a Super Bowl, the Jets are again bundling their way incompetently through the offseason.

Reddick has been placed on the r eserve/did not report list and will be fined $50,000 for not reporting to training camp. 

You don't need to be a fortune teller to know this was in the cards. This happens when you acquire a player who made his desire for a raise clear even before being traded. 

With both sides intent on holding firm, this holdout could manifest into a potentially ruinous distraction. Had it not been for Reddick's no-show, the Jets would have been a four-star Super Bowl choice. Not so much anymore.  

If it's any consolation, the Jets should end their NFL-long 13-season playoff drought.
