With a national television audience and a packed home crowd, the Liberty Flames football team put themselves on the math with a convincing win over the Brigham Young Cougars two weeks ago, 41-14. Trailing 14-3 after the first quarter, the Flames started to heat up and would go on to score the games next 38 points in a dominant win. Liberty is now 7-1 on the season with their only loss coming to Wake Forest on the road, 37-36. Liberty is now ranked 23rd in the country.

“To our fans, what an incredible atmosphere. To see them so ecstatic having the time they had brings me great joy. I’ve gotten to experience that twice before, and it never gets old. I just think it was a big night. Our players, man did they fight. … Our kids had a great game, great plan, great execution of it. I’ve been holding us back some offensively, as you saw. Maybe I shouldn’t do that and make some of these other games quite as interesting. Really it came down to JB being a consistent quarterback tonight, using his legs when he needed to, his check-downs when he needed to. It’s a big night. … I just told them, point blank, this is the biggest game in school history.” said a jubilant Liberty head coach Hugh Freeze after the win.

The Liberty offense was propelled by 300 yards of rushing offense and three rushing touchdowns. Running back Dae Dae Hunter led the way with 213 yards on 23 carries with a touchdown. Quarterback Jonathan Bennett went 24-of-29 for 247 yards and two scores in the win. He also threw one interception. Liberty had 547 total yards of offense compared with just 258 for BYU. They had 29 first downs in the game and held the Cougars to just 12. Liberty overcame two turnovers in the game despite not forcing any Cougar turnovers. They also dominated time of possession, nearly doubling the Cougars by holding the ball 39 minutes compared to just 20 for BYU.&#13 ;

The 7-1 Flames have put up impressive rankings on both sides of the ball. They have the 18th best ground game in the country and are 35th in scoring offense. Liberty is a bit one-dimensional with just the 75th ranked passing offense although Bennett is coming off a strong game against BYU. As a result of their run-heavy offense, they are just 95th in offensive efficiency in the red zone. Defensively, the Flames have been stingy with the nation's 26th ranked scoring defense. They are an impressive 18th against the run and 27th against the pass and certainly passed the test against the BYU ground game holding their potent ground game to just 71 yards. Liberty tightens up in the red zone, ranking 14th in red zone defense.
