Kentucky (3-0 SU, 2-1 ATS) looks to improve to 4-0 when they meet Vanderbilt (2-2 SU, 0-4 ATS) on Saturday at 12pmET from FirstBank Stadium in Nashville. Kentucky has started out 3-0 for three straight seasons for just the third time in school history and the last time it happened was the in early 1900s.
Last season, the Commodores upset the Wildcats 24-21 on the road as a 17-point underdog.
Kentucky opened up at 3-0, but they were facing Ohio State, Georgia and Michigan. They beat Ball State (44-14), FCS Eastern Kentucky (28-17), and Akron (35-3) were all early victims. After a poor performance against an FCS team at home as a 34.5-point favorite, the Wildcats took care of business, covering as a 25.5-point favorite. Quarterback Devin Leary completed 16 of 26 for 315 yards with three TDs and one pick. The Wildcats also ran for 135 yards and held the Zips to just 49 yards on 25 attempts.
The key for the Wildcats is the performance of Leary, who took over at quarterback for Will Levis, now with the Tennessee Titans. Leary might actually be an upgrade to the talented, but not always consistent Levis. He has thrown for 855 yards, eight TDs and three picks in the first three games against subpar opponents. But he was tested when he was at NC State, threw for 3,433 yards in 2021 with 35 TDs and five picks. He has 70 touchdowns for his career and just 19 picks.
Kentucky's top target is Tayvion Robinson, who has 14 catches for 260 yards and three TDs. Vandy transfer Ray Davis leads in rushing with 236 yards and three TDs on 7.2 yards per carry. Defensively, Kentucky ranks 27th overall in yards allowed (281.7ypg), and 14th against the run (71ypg). On offense, they are averaging 407 yards per game (58th) and 285 passing yards (4th in SEC, 31st overall). But they are averaging just 122 yards per game on the ground to rank 104th.
