Kansas City Chiefs vs. San Francisco 49ers Prediction, Preview, and Odds – 10-23-2022

In a rematch from Super Bowl LIV and a possible preview of this year's Super Bowl, the Kansas City Chiefs had to San Francisco to take on the 49ers on Sunday afternoon. The Chiefs come in after a physical and taxing game against AFC rival Buffalo, in which they fell 24-20 to fall to 4-2 on the season. The 49ers meanwhile sit at just 3-3 after losing on the road to the Falcons 28-14 with a banged-up defense. While not on the defensive side of the ball, help is on the way for the 49ers as they executed a mid-week trade to bring in Pro Bowl running back Christian McCaffrey from the Panthers for draft picks. The opening kick for this matchup is scheduled for 4:25pm EST.

The Kansas City Chiefs come into this matchup fresh off an emotionally draining game with their AFC arch-rivals, the Buffalo Bills. As usual, the game came down to the final drive but, this time, QB Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs fell short with Mahomes being picked off by the Bills. Mahomes finished the day 25-of-40 for 338 yards and two touchdowns. He did surprisingly throw two interception, including the game clincher.

“It was a great battle. You love these games,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. “You just don't want to be sitting on this end of it. But you love the competition and the way the guys get after it.”

The Chiefs ground game was non-existent, held to just 68 yards on 18 carries by the stout Bills defense. Wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster had his best game as a Chief with five catches for 113 yards and a touchdown. Tight end Travis Kelce had another big day with eight catches for 108 yards. The Chiefs had 23 first downs in the game and were 4-of-11 on third down conversions and 1-of-1 on fourth down. They had 387 yards of total offense in the game and were 1-of-2 in the red zone.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Chiefs allowed 26 first downs and a third down conversion rate of 4-of-11. They also stopped the Bills on two of three fourth down attempts. They forced one turnover on a fumble and gave up 443 yards of total offense. KC had one sack in the game against the mobile Josh Allen and had four quarterback hits. The Chiefs also recorded six tackles for loss in the game.

There will be no rest for the weary for the Chiefs as they head west to take on a formidable 49ers team. The Chiefs will look to win this game primarily with their efforts on the offensive side of the ball. KC comes into this matchup with the #1 scoring offense in the NFL. They are just 20th rushing the football but are 4th through the air. Despite going just 1-of-2 against the Bills, the Chiefs remain highly potent in the red zone, ranking #2 in the NFL. One area of concern for head coach Andy Reid has been the team's penchant for turnovers thus far. KC ranks just 20th in the NFL in turnover differential. On the defensive side of the ball, the Chiefs are 24th in the NFL in scoring defense. They are fourth against the run but a dismal 27th against the pass. Part of that can be attributed to most teams throwing to keep up with the Chiefs but it is still concerning. In the red zone, the Chiefs defense has wilted, ranking just 29th in the NFL in red zone efficienc y.

Key Injuries: Cornerback Rashad Fenton didn't practice this week but DE Mike Danna and OG Joe Thuney both returned on a limited basis and should be ready to go. In addition, CB Trent McDuffie (hamstring) has practiced all week and may be ready to return.
