A pair of teams that have been pillars of the playoff picture in the AFC over the last couple of decades lock up on the gridiron in week 15 NFL action up in Foxborough. The Kansas City Chiefs are on the road as they make the trip to take on the New England Patriots Sunday afternoon. Kansas City fell 20-17 to Buffalo at home in their previous contest, losing outright as a one-point favorite, last Sunday. New England upended Pittsburgh 21-18 on the road in their previous contest back on December 7, winning outright as a 5.5-point underdog. In the all-time regular season series between the teams, the Chiefs own a 20-14-3 advantage, including a 26-10 home win in the most recent matchup on October 5, 2020.

Kansas City had opportunities but failed to convert them into points, leading to a three-point home loss to the Bills last Sunday. The Chiefs dropped to 8-5 on the season and hold a one-game lead on the Broncos in the AFC West even with the defeat. Against Buffalo, Kansas City trailed 7-0 after the opening quarter, 14-0 in the second quarter, 14-7 at the half, 17-7 in the third quarter and 17-14 after three quarters. The Chiefs tied the game at 17 early in the fourth quarter, gave up the go-ahead field goal with 1:54 to play and had one last chance to take the lead or at least force overtime. A potential go-ahead touchdown was negated on an offensive offside call on Kadarius Toney and the Chiefs eventually turned the ball over on downs, sealing their fate. Kansas City held a 346-327 edge in total offense in a game where both teams finished with 21 first downs. The Chiefs turned the ball over twice while forcing one takeaway and were dominat ed 35:21 to 24:39 in time of possession in the game.

The Chiefs enter this game 6th in the league in passing offense as they average 253.5 yards per game this season. Kansas City is 17th in the league in rushing offense as they grind out 107.8 yards per contest on the ground. The Chiefs are 11th in scoring offense as they put up an average of 22.5 points per game while they stand 3rd in scoring defense as they allow 17.5 points per contest. Patrick Mahomes is the signal caller for the Chiefs: he is 326 of 487 for 3,398 yards with 23 touchdowns and 11 interceptions on the year. He is second on the team with 339 rushing yards. Blaine Gabbert is three of five passing for 31 yards with two interceptions. In the run game, Isiah Pacheco leads the team with 176 carries for 779 yards and six scores. Clyde Edwards-Helaire (51 carries, 179 yards, TD) is the next man up in the ground game. When the Chiefs go to the air, tight end Travis Kelce leads the team with 80 receptions for 896 yards and five scores this season. Justin Watson (21 catches, 350 yards, two TD), Rashee Rice (59 grabs, 663 yards, six TD), Noah Gray (22 receptions, 246 yards, two TD), Skyy Moore (21 catches, 244 yards, TD), Pacheco (33 grabs, 209 yards, TD) and Marquez Valdes-Scantling (19 grabs, 295 yards, TD) all have exceeded the 200-yard mark in receiving yards this season. Harrison Butker is 31 of 31 on extra point attempts and 23 of 23 on field goal attempts with a long of 60 on the year.

The early injury report for the Chiefs had some concerning names on it. Running back Isiah Pacheco (shoulder), tackle Donovan Smith (neck), linebacker Leo Chenal (illness) and safety Mike Edwards (illness) did not practice Wednesday. Linebacker Nick Bolton (wrist/abdomen) was limited in Wednesday’s practice. Watch for updates for their respective statuses leading into kickoff.
