The Iowa Hawkeyes will need to finish strong over the final two weeks and in the Big Ten tournament to earn an NCAA Tournament berth. On Sunday, the Hawkeyes were blasted by Northwestern on the road, 80-60. Iowa had dominated the head-to-head series heading into this game but fell flat to a Northwestern team trying to earn its way to the tournament as well. Kris Murray led the Hawkeyes with 14 points and added five rebounds as well. Tony Perkins chipped in with 11 points, all in the second half. The Hawkeyes shot just 3-of-24 from long range on the afternoon.

“You have got to give Northwestern credit. They made shots early. [Ty] Berry was really good early. Buie was, of course, terrific. He has been terrific all year, one of the best players in our league. We just struggled. You are going to have a hard time winning going three of 24 from three. They played well from the start.

“Th e bottom line is you have got to give credit to your opponent. We didn’t get in sync. Our transition, our halfcourt offense, nothing was flowing correctly. You can’t blame anybody, you just have to be better. You have to learn and grow from that and be better. And credit your opponent for how well they played. They played really well, they have been playing really well. They are one of the best teams in our league. Give credit to [Northwestern head coach Chris Collins]. I have said before he will be the coach of the year in our league without a double in my mind.” Head coach Fran McCaffery said after the rough loss.

Iowa will need a strong finish to close the season to secure a spot in the Big Dance. The Hawkeyes will likely get it done through their offense. Iowa ranks first in the Big Ten in scoring offense. The Hawkeyes are fifth in field goal percentage this season in the conference. They are seventh in three-point field goal percentage. The Hawkeyes are fourth in the Big Ten in fewest turnovers per game. Iowa is 14th in scoring defense in the Big Ten. The team is just 14th in opponent's field goal percentage and 13th in three-point defense. The Hawkeyes are sixth in the Big Ten in total rebounding.
