In recent years, the Iowa State Cyclones have fielded one of the better offenses in the high scoring Big XII conference. This season, however, scoring has been hard to come by for the Cyclones. On Saturday, the Cyclones scoring woes continued in a 10-9 loss to Kansas State at home. After starting the season at 3-0, Iowa State is now 3-3 on the season and 0-3 in Big XII conference play.

“I thought we had a good plan coming in, obviously the inconsistency of that plan continues to show up. I am part of that as anybody, but I don’t feel like we are totally off kilter. It is just our inconsistencies and we have to be right on right now to be consistent, and we are not.” Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell said in his postgame press conference.

Iowa State quarterback Hunter Dekkers went 22-of-38 for 198 yards without a touchdown and no interceptions on the day. His main target was Xavie r Hutchinson, who had eight catches for 100 yards in the game. Iowa State had just 276 total yards of offense in the game. They had 16 first downs but were just 4-of-13 on third down conversions. The Cyclones also had just 76 yards rushing on the day, averaging just 3.2 yards per carry against the Cougars. Overall, the Cyclones only averaged just 4.5 yards per play.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Cyclones gave up 388 yards of total offense and 6.7 yards per play. They had three sacks in the game and six tackles for loss. The Cyclones also forced a fumble for the game's only turnover.

Iowa State's offensive difficulties are splattered all over the team's offensive stats. Iowa State is ranked just 107th in the country in scoring offense. In Big XII games thus far, they've scored just 44 points including 20 points in the last two weeks. On the ground, Iowa State is ranked just 117th in the country as they continue to miss the hard-nosed running of Breece Hall who is now with the New York Jets. The team is ranked 54th in the country in passing but has struggled mightily over the past two weeks and injuries to running backs Jirehl Brok and Cartevious Norton have not helped the ground game, which is now ranked 63rd in the country. Both running backs status for this week is up in the air at this time. Defensively, Iowa State has been one of the best in the Big XII. They are ranked 8th in defensive scoring as well as 8th against the run. The Cyclones are also 14th in the country against the pass.
