Indianapolis Colts vs. New England Patriots Prediction, Preview, and Odds – 11-6-2022

The Indianapolis Colts head to Foxboro, MA to take on their long-time rivals, the New England Patriots. Gone are the days of Manning vs. Brady, however, as this matchup will feature QB Sam Ehlinger taking on fellow second-year quarterback Mac Jones. The Colts come in at 3-4-1 while the Patriots are 4-4 following a road win over the Jets last week. The opening kick is scheduled for 1:00pm EST.

Curiously, just two weeks after Colts' owner Jim Irsay publicly supported quarterback Matt Ryan, the team has decided to move on from the long-time Falcons QB and have named Sam Ehlinger the starter for the rest of the season. In addition, the Colts have fired offensive coordinator Marcus Ryan and traded away 3rd down back Nyheim Hines to the Bills for running back Zach Moss and a draft pick. It appears as though the Colts may be punting this season and trying to establish building blocks for the future. Last week, in his first-ever NFL start, Ehlinger went 17-of-23 for 201 yards in a 17-16 loss to the Washington Commanders at home. The Colts have now lost two straight games and have struggled to replicate even the offense they produced last year under Carson Wentz. In the midst of their struggles, head coach Frank Reich decided to move on from his offensive coordinator.

“This was an incredibly hard decision, but one I felt needed to be made in the best interest of the team,” head coach Frank Reich said in a statement. “I appreciate Marcus' commitment to the organization, and he made a significant contribution to our offensive success over the last five seasons. I wish him the best moving forward.”

Reich will continue to call the offensive plays as the Colts transition to an altered offense with a new, more mobile quarterback. The Colts are 30th in the NFL in scoring offense and, one year after Jonathan Taylor led the NFL in rushing, are 29th in rushing offense. They are 9th in passing offense but just 26th in red zone offensive efficiency. The Colts have been atrocious in protecting the football, 31st in the NFL.  The Colts defense, despite their anemic offense, has played well. They are 7th in scoring defense thus far in the season. They are 16th against the run and 8th against the pass. In the red zone, the Colts defense is ranked just 19th.

Key Injuries: CB Tony Brown (hamstring), CB Stephon Gilmore (rib), OT Dennis Kelly (calf/ankle), RB Zack Moss (travel), DE Yannick Ngakoue (rest), QB Matt Ryan (right shoulder), LB Grant Stuard (pectoral), RB Jonathan Taylor (ankle). The most pressing concerns are Tayler and Moss. Moss appea rs healthy enough but will be limited as he adjusts to the playbook. Backup RB Deon Jackson may see significant time.
