Illinois at Northwestern – 1/4/23 College Basketball Picks and Prediction

The Illinois Fighting Illini will make the three-hour trip to Evanston and face the Northwestern Wildcats from the Welsh-Ryan Arena in Big Ten play. Northwestern and Illinois are each other’s oldest rivals, and the Illini hold a 141-43 all-time series lead after winning eight meetings in a row.

Illinois moved to 9-4 after beating Bethune Cookman at home. The Fighting Illini responded to a rough loss to border rival Mizzou with an assertive victory over the Wildcats, covering the 30-point spread along the way. Illinois is scoring 78.1 points per game, while allowing 63.7 ppg, and shooting 46.5% from the floor.

Illinois will look to find consistency after trading each of their past six games, and starting Big Ten play 0-2. Terrence Shannon Jr. has transferred in from Texas Tech and handled the lead role well. Shannon posted a big time 29-point double-double in the win over UCLA, and he’s leading Illinois in scoring (17.8), while grabbing 5.4 rpg. Baylor transfer Matthew Mayer scored a game-high 21 points against familiar foe Texas, and he’s averaging 17.8 ppg over his last five games. Veteran Coleman Hawkins remains in the fold, and he leads the team in rebounding (6.5), while scoring 9.2 ppg.
