These were the two worst teams in the Western Conference last year, but both teams in this game are hoping for more in the 2023-24 campaign. The Houston Rockets (0-1; 0-1-0 ATS) will stay on the road, while the San Antonio Spurs (0-1; 0-1-0 ATS) will get another crack at home. This will be game two for the Spurs in the newly named Frost Bank Center only this time the tipoff is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. EDT on Friday. The four meetings between these franchises were split last season. How will round one go early in this one?

With an unimpressive Orlando Magic team in front of them, the Houston Rockets hopefully envisioned a much better showing than Wednesday's 116-86 loss. If there are any positives, Alperen Sengun led the team in points (14), rebounds (8), assists (6), and was a Houston-best -2 for the contest. New guard Fred VanVleet was only -3 in the defeat as well. Thankfully, Tuesday's game only counts as one loss, and a team that they are familiar with is up next.

After finishing 27th in offensive rating last season, an 86-point showing in game one wasn't ideal. They shot 40.5% from the floor, only hit 10 of their 16 free throws, and committed 18 turnovers. Houston's offensive rebounding was also poor in their first game. Only taking 17.7% of their shots from the midrange is an absolute positive, but not much else went well.

Last year's squad was 29th in defensive rating, a number that Dillon Brooks' arrival was supposed to improve. Well, Orlando put up 116 on them despite shooting 26.5% from beyond the arc. The Rockets made themselves an early candidate for the NBA's worst defensive-rebounding team on Tuesday. They also allowed the Magic to make 73.5% of their shots at the rim and attempt 26 free throws. Most people didn't expect the 2023-24 Rockets to be good, but Wednesday was still a clear thud. Let's see if they can bounce back on Friday.
