Houston Astros vs. New York Yankees Prediction, Preview, and Odds – 10-23-2022

On Saturday night, the New York Yankees sent their stopper, Gerrit Cole, to the mound to try and get back into the series. Unfortunately, the Astros aren't ready to lose yet in the playoffs and won their sixth straight postseason game, 5-0, to take a commanding 3 games to none lead in the ALCS. Sunday, the pitching matchup will be Lance McCullers Jr. (4-2, 2.27) of the Astros taking on Nestor Cortes (12-4, 2.44) of the Yankees as New York hopes to avoid elimination. First pitch is scheduled for 7:07pm EST.

The Houston Astros continued their postseason excellence on Saturday night with a 5-0 win over the Yankees. The win pushes the Astros to the brink of making the World Series for the second straight season and the fourth time since 2017. Christian Javier, who had thrown just two innings since October 1st, continued his season dominance of the Yankees with 5.1 innings of one-hit baseball for the win. The Astros got all the runs they would need in the 2nd inning after Harrison Bader dropped a Christian Vazquez fly ball and Chas McCormick followed that up with a 2-run home run. The Astros had just six hits and struck out 11 times but made all their hits count in picking up their sixth straight postseason win.

“That's what the game's about,” Astros manager Dusty Baker said “Even though it may not be, you have to kind of fool yourself that it is a break. And it's amazing whatever you think can happen usually doe s happen. That was huge.”

Houston has out-pitched, out-hit and out-homered the Bronx Bombers to put themselves within one victory of moving on to the World Series again. The Astros will turn to righty Lance McCullers Jr. to put the Yankees away on Saturday night. McCullers was injured for much of the season but came back late to give the Astros another weapon in their pitching staff. He was the starter in the Astros' 18-inning series clinching win over the Mariners. He went six innings and allowed just two hits without a run in the start. He is 3-1 with a 2.56 ERA in his last five starts and now has the chance to start his second straight series-clinching win for the Astros.
