Houston had plenty of chances but couldn’t put Cleveland away in the opening game of the series Friday night in their first game since Yordan Alvarez hit the IL. The Astros entered Saturday 36-28 on the year and stood five games behind the Rangers for the top spot in the division. On Friday night, Houston finished with 15 hits, led by Jeremy Pena’s (run) four-hit night. Jose Abreu hit his second homer of the season to stake the Astros to an early lead but it slipped away. The Astros were six for 28 with runners in scoring position in the loss and left 14 runners on base in the game. Cristian Javier didn’t factor in the decision as he allowed four runs on seven hits with three walks and two strikeouts over five innings. Seth Martinez (1-2) took the loss as he allowed four runs (one earned) on four hits with three walks and four strikeouts over 3.1 innings of work.

Brandon Bielak is on the bump for the Astros as he makes his eighth appearance and seventh start of the season in this contest. He comes into this one 3-2 with a 3.35 ERA, a 1.513 WHIP, 13 walks and 30 strikeouts over 37.2 innings of work on the year. Bielak earned the win in his last start, which came Monday on the road against the Blue Jays. He threw 6.2 innings, allowing three runs on 10 hits with one walk and two strikeouts in a game the Astros won 11-4. In his last three starts, Bielak is 2-1 with a 3.79 ERA, a 1.21 WHIP, five walks and 11 strikeouts over 19 innings of work. Bielak, in his 53rd career major league outing and 15th start, pitches against the Guardians for the first time. As a result, this marks his first career outing at Progressive Field as well.
