Home Run Derby Prediction 1: Mookie Betts (+1800)
Now, before we dive into analysis on why Mookie Betts can win the Home Run Derby, he's on record saying that he doesn't stand a chance to win. He's doing this solely because it's the only thing that's not on his MLB resume.
Teammate J.D. Martinez has been helping Betts realize that while everyone else might be focused on killing the baseball, Betts has the size and frame to maintain the endurance it takes to get through the Home Run Derby while not needing to crush it 450 feet every time.
His average home run distance is 397 feet which is bottom half of all MLB batters. Martinez and Betts played together on Boston where Martinez helped coach Betts on his power hitting in which he has 26 home runs heading into the break.
Those 26 are tied with Pete Alonzo and Luis Robert Jr. for most among all Home Run Derby participants as Betts leads the way among participants in slugging percentage.
If Betts can get through the first round and gain confidence as the Home Run Derby progresses, +1800 odds are great value on the Dodgers' outfielder who has hit 13 of 26 home runs in June and July while batting .317 opposed to batting just .256 in April and May.
Of all Home Run Derby participants, Betts had to travel the least amount of distance to get to T-Mobile Park in Seattle besides home town favorite Julio Rodriguez minimizing travel fatigue.
One other notable factor is all Home Run Derby participants played in games yesterday while the Dodgers had the day off giving Betts an extra day of rest.
Home Run Derby Prediction 2: Julio Rodriguez (+500)
This year's Home Run Derby is what everyone in Seattle has been talking about since Julio Rodriguez broke out as a rookie last season and finished second in the Home Run Derby to Juan Soto.
Everyone had their eyes set on this year's Home Run Derby as it was pretty much a lock Rodriguez would participate barring any type of injury.
Sure, he's not having the season he'd hoped for so far with only 13 home runs with his last not coming since June 24th, but we already know he has the experience, stamina and capability to take the 2023 Home Run Derby crown.
He has a stout first round opponent in two-time Home Run Derby winner Pete Alonso and is on the same side of the bracket as Betts and Guerrero Jr. as the winner is looking like it will be from the right side.
With +500 odds, this is a solid price point to look at the home town kid to take the next step in the Home Run Derby and come away with the championship, hopefully leading to a more consistent second half for the Mariners outfielder.
