For the only time this regular season, the Hampton Pirates (6-20, 12-12-1 ATS, 3-10 CAA) and the Elon Phoenix (6-20, 13-11-0, 4-9 CAA) will square off on the court. This will mark the first-ever game between the schools in men's basketball. Their current trajectories for the season couldn't be further apart heading into this matchup. With a 9:00 p.m. EST tipoff in Elon's Schar Center, let's see how the first of many games between these CAA schools will unfold.
Hampton endured a 10-game losing streak that included their first seven conference contests. They followed that up by winning three of four. Well, they've lost their last three since then, all by double-digits. They are in sole possession of last place in the CAA. KenPom has them ranked 349th out of 363 teams in their rankings, ahead of only Monmouth among CAA schools. The Pirates are 1-10 on the road this season.
On Saturday they were home against Charleston, losing 83-70. Hampton was outrebounded 40-31 and only hit 41.8% of their shots in the loss. They led by 15 early but never led in the second half. Jordan Nesbitt nearly had a triple-double, racking up a team-leading 20 points and eight rebounds. Hampton managed to beat the spread despite losing by 13.
Hampton plays uptempo, ranking 118th in the nation in adjusted tempo. They manage 68.3 points per game because of it despite being one o f the worst shooting teams in the country. They only hit 39.3% of field goals, 12th in the conference and 359th nationwide.
It gets worse on defense. They are last in the CAA by allowing 77.4 points per game on 46.9% shooting. Those numbers are 346th and 341st in college basketball this season, respectively. They allow foes to hit 37.7% of threes, which isn't last in the conference but is still 344th nationally.
