Hampton vs. Drexel Prediction, Preview, and Odds – 1-19-2023

The (3-15 SU, 6-10-1 ATS) Hampton Pirates and (10-8 SU, 11-6 ATS) Drexel Dragons will take the floor on Thursday for a CAA hoops match. Hampton, 0-8 on the road, lost 79-67 to North Carolina A&T on Monday. Drexel, 7-2 at home, beat Northeastern 76-55 on Saturday. This is the Pirates' first season in the Colonial Athletic Association and the first meeting between these teams.

Tip-off from Daskalakis Athletic Center in Philadelphia is at 7:00 p.m. ET. The Dragons are 14.5-point spread favorites, and the game total is 135 points.

Hampton is not a good basketball team, with 15 losses in 18 games. The Pirates have not won since picking up consecutive victories over Howard and Loyola Maryland in early December non-conference games.

In Hampton's latest loss, the ninth straight, it trailed by 12 at halftime and couldn't mount a comeback. The Aggies shot 49.2 percent and held the Pirates to 31.8, including 6-for-22 from three-point distance. It would have been much more lopsided if NC A&T hit their free throws (14-for-24) and Hampton did not (19-for-23). The Pirates did outrebound their opponent 44-36, collecting 19 offensive rebounds.

Hampton scores 67.3 points on 37.6 percent shooting from the field (362nd), including 32.4 percent from long range. It shoots 66.3 percent from the foul line and averages 31.7 rebounds with a negative-five rebounding margin. Hampton is 333rd in schedule-adjusted offensive efficiency, per KenPom.

Sophomore guard Jordan Nesbitt averages 14.3 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 3.0 assists. Other key players to watch are senior guards Russell Dean (13.5 PPG, 4.3 APG, and 3.8 RPG) and Marquis Godwin (12.0 PPG).

The Pirates surrender 78.9 points on 47.4 percent shooting, including 39.3 percent from distance. They're 352nd in schedule-adjusted defensive efficiency and 246th in assist-per-turnover ratio (0.90).
