Aside from a minor hurdle in the opening round, Seton Hall has looked like the best team in the NIT under coach Shaheen Holloway, who led that inspired run by Saint Peter's in 2022. And his team is well-positioned to reach this year's NIT final.
You could argue the Pirates deserved a spot in the NCAA Tournament after an up-and-down year in the Big East, which included a shocking 15-point win over UConn – the overwhelming title favorite by the latest March Madness odds – and a thrilling win over Marquette two weeks later.
The same can't be said for Georgia, which lost 13 of its final 18 games in SEC play before narrowly surviving the first three rounds of the NIT. Aside from poor shooting, the biggest issue for the Bulldogs came on the glass, as they rank 238th in the country in both offensive rebound rate (27.3%) and defensive rebound rate (30.4%).
That's a major issue against Seton Hall, which ranks in the top 20 on the offensive glass (35.6%) with four players averaging more than five rebounds per game. The Pirates also rank among the nation's best in block rate (14%) and free-throw shooting (77.9%), which could come into play if this game is decided down low.
Eleven of Seton Hall's last 12 wins have come by at least six points, including a 23-point win to reach the NIT semifinals. Perhaps Georgia can conjur some March Madness magic in early April, but I don't expect this one t o be close.
