College bowl season is in full swing and that brings us a clash of mid-major programs when a program from the Sun Belt takes on one from the Mountain West. The Georgia State Panthers do battle with the Utah State Aggies in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl Saturday afternoon. Georgia State finished their regular season with a 25-24 loss to Old Dominion on the road on November 25 though they covered the line as a 2.5-point underdog. Utah State edged New Mexico 44-41 on the road in double overtime in their season finale November 25 though they failed to cover the line as a 6.5-point favorite. This marks the first time that the two programs have met as FBS opponents on the gridiron.

Georgia State started the year strong but crumpled down the stretch, losing their final five games after losing to Old Dominion. The Panthers ended the regular season 6-6 and 3-5 in the Sun Belt as they were fifth in the East Division standings. Against Old Dominion, Georgia State dominated the first half but faded in the second half to wind up with the loss. The Panthers led 7-0 after one quarter, 21-0 at the half and 21-7 after three quarters. They led 24-14 with under two minutes to go but gave up a field goal, a safety on the ensuing possession and then let the Monarchs go 49 yards in five plays, capped by a three-yard touchdown run by Grant Wilson as time expired, to end up with the loss. Georgia State was edged 313-300 in total offense and turned the ball over twice while forcing one takeaway. Their late game meltdown wiped away the fact that the Panthers had a 17-13 edge in first downs and a 37:35 to 22:25 advantage in time of posses sion.

The Panthers are 96th in the nation in passing offense last season as they average 200.9 yards per game through the air and 51st in rushing offense with an average of 171.6 yards per contest. Georgia State is 79th in the FBS in scoring offense with 25.8 points per game while they stand 105th in scoring defense by allowing 30.8 points per contest. Darren Grainger has hit 225 of 336 passes for 2,364 yards with 17 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He is second on the team in rushing as he adds 625 yards and eight scores on the ground. Mikele Colasurdo is five of eight for 47 yards while adding 19 yards and a score on the ground. Marcus Carroll is the lead back in the run game with 274 carries for 1,350 yards and 13 touchdowns this season. No other running back has more than 61 yards on the ground for the Panthers. Robert Lewis leads the team with 70 receptions for 877 yards and seven touchdown s on the year. Talique Williams (46 catches, 581 yards, five TD), Jacari Carter (34 grabs, 227 yards) and Carroll (23 receptions, 234 yards) are the only other players over 150 receiving yards this season. Liam Rickman is 35 of 36 on extra point attempts and eight of 10 on field goal attempts with a long of 46. Isaac Kone is three of three on extra point attempts and missed his lone field goal attempt this season. Diego Medina hit his lone extra point attempt without attempting a field goal this season.

Carroll and Adams are both in the transfer portal, which would deplete the running back depth for the Panthers. Lewis is also in the portal, which could take away the team’s top receiving threat. Right tackle Montavious Cunningham is also in the portal, dealing a blow to the offensive line.
