Georgia Southern vs. UAB Prediction, Preview, and Odds – 9-17-2022

Georgia Southern pulled off what could wind up being one of the biggest upsets of the college football season when it knocked off Nebraska as a 23.5-point underdog last weekend. The Eagles will try to build on that victory when they travel to UAB as double-digit underdogs on Saturday. UAB is coming off a 21-14 loss to Liberty last week—this will be the first ever meeting between these programs.

Georgia Southern picked up one of its best wins in school history when it knocked off Nebraska as a 23.5-point underdog last week. The Eagles opened the season with a 59-7 win over Morgan State and followed it up with the shocking upset on the road against the Cornhuskers. The teams went back in forth in what was a high-scoring affair, but Georgia Southern landed the final blow with a touchdown in the last minute of the game, leading to “Fire Scott Frost” chants from Nebraska’s student section. Eagles quarterback Kyle Vantrease completed 37 of 56 passes for 409 yards and one touchdown, while also adding an additional touchdown on the ground.

Running back Gerald Green had 10 carries for 132 yards and two touchdowns—Jalen White had 17 touches for 85 yards and two scores of his own. Vantrease has completed 64.7% of his passes for 776 yards and five touchdowns this season. Green has averaged 8.0 yards per carry on 22 attempts, while four wide receivers have 130-plus receiving yards this year. The Eagles currently lead the Sun Belt in rushing touchdowns (9) and passing yards per game (388.0). Derwin Burgess Jr. became the third player in school history to record 10 or more catches in a game when he caught a school-record 12 passes at Nebraska last week. Georgia Southern will be looking to keep its Sun Belt-leading offense going this week against a UAB defense that is allowing 312.5 yards per game and ranks 12th nationally in third down defense.
