The Georgia Southern Eagles won their first Sun Belt Conference game of the year and it came at the expense of #25 James Madison on Saturday night, 45-38. After taking the lead with under two minutes remaining, the Eagles sealed the win with an interception to topple James Madison and remove them from the ranks of the unbeaten.

“I just can’t tell you how special this night is for our football team,” said Eagle head coach Clay Helton. “This is the second time in the program history we have knocked off a Top-25 ranked team in Paulson Stadium. This team has done some really neat things this year, and now we need to collectively build on this.”

Quarterback Kyle Vantrease threw for a school-record 578 yards and four touchdowns including the game winner with 1:10 left to wide receiver Derwin Burgess Jr. for 22 yards. The Eagles had 578 yards of total offense but just 12 yards on the ground. They averaged an impressive 15.2 yards per passing play in the game. Vantrease threw the ball 64 times and had one pick to go along with his four touchdowns.

The big play of the game by the Georgia Southern defense was the late-game interception by Anthony Wilson. Overall, the Eagles defense struggled on the night. They allowed 31 first downs and 675 yards of total offense in the game. They finished with three sacks and three interceptions against James Madison.

Georgia Southern is ranked 25th in the country in scoring offense this season. Not surprisingly based on the James Madison game, the Eagles rely primarily on their passing attack. Georgia Southern is ranked 64th in the nation in rushing but are ranked 3rd in passing offense. In the red zone, despite having to throw for the most part, they are 22nd in the country in red zone efficiency. The Eagles are ranked 107th in the country in turnover differential. On the defensive side of the ball, they are ranked just 112th in the country in scoring defense. They are vulnerable to both the run and pass. They are 125th in the country against the run and just 119th in the country against the run. The Eagles do not offer much resistance in the red zone, ranking 95th in red zone efficiency on the defensive end.
