First Bets In Maine Expected In November

Maine regulators expect to launch legal sports betting between Nov. 5-15, according to a report on Maine Public Radio.

The state’s Gambling Control Unit published proposed regulations, which have been at the attorney general’s office since earlier this year. When the proposed regulations were initially opened for public comment, Gambling Control Unit chief Milt Champion said his office received 581 comments from 24 interested parties, and that it would incorporate some changes but not others.

Once the attorney general’s office signs off on the proposed regulations, they will go to the secretary of state’s office for final approval. That process should take less than a week, and once the secretary of state posts the rules, wagering can go live.

To date, Caesars Sportsbook is the only operator to have announced market access in Maine, through deals with three of the state’s four tribes. The Mi’kmak Nation, the Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians, and the Penobscot Nation all have deals with Caesars, which declined to comment on its plans in Maine. The company could potentially launch between one and three platforms under different banners. Caesars owns multiple other gaming brands, including Harrah’s, though to date it has not used any other than the Caesars brand for a sports wagering platform.
