The Fairfield Stags and Iona Gaels face off on Friday in a college basketball showdown at the Hynes Electric Center. When these two teams faced off in February it was Iona that secured the 76-58 victory.
Fairfield comes into this game with a 6-9 record overall and they have gone 7-7 against the spread. In the last game against Niagara, Fairfield scored only 69 points and that led to the eight-point defeat. Fairfield is averaging 65.1 points while their defense is giving up 65.2 points per game. The offense has been inconsistent, but the defense is ranked 83rd and they need the defense to be strong here. Supreme Cook is averaging 13.2 points while shooting 53.3 percent from the field. In this game, if Fairfield wants to find success they are going to need the defense to step up.
On the other side of this matchup is Iona who sits with an 11-5 record and they have gone 10-6 against the spread. In the last game against Quinnipiac, the defense gave up 81 points and that led to the 23-point defeat. Two games ago against Marist they were able to secure the 84-57 victory. Iona is averaging 76.6 points while their defense is giving up 66.6 points per game. Daniss Jenkins is averaging 16.4 points while shooting 43.8 percent from the field and 38.4 percent from behind the three point line. I would expect Iona is going to really try to push the pace and put the pressure on the Fairfield defense.
