Edmonton Oilers (2-8-1) vs. San Jose Sharks (1-10-1)

The 2023-24 NHL season continues Thursday, November 9, with the Edmonton Oilers facing off against the San Jose Sharks in the Pacific Division showdown at SAP Center at San Jose with the puck drop at 10:30 PM ET.

Edmonton and San Jose lock horns for the first time this season, and the Oilers aim for their ninth consecutive victory over the Sharks. The Oilers are listed as surefire -300 moneyline favorites, while the total sits at 7.0 goals and is juiced to the under.

The Edmonton Oilers extended their losing streak to three games following Monday’s 6-2 defeat at the Vancouver Canucks. After a couple of home losses to the Dallas Stars 4-3 and the Nashville Predators 5-2, the Oilers started a three-game road trip with another lousy defensive performance, so head coach Jay Woodcroft might start looking for a new job soon.

Edmonton outshot Vancouver 43-36, but Thatcher Demko proved his strong form between the pipes. The Canucks were up 3-1 by the end of the first period, finishing the game with three power-play goals out of six opportunities. The Oilers committed nine penalties for 24 minutes while going 1-for-3 with the man advantage, and Leon Draisaitl scored his fifth goal of the season.

The Oilers are scoring 2.64 goals per game (tied-26th in the NHL) while surrendering 4.27 goals in return (31st). They rank ninth in the league in power-play percentage (25.6%) and 31st in penalty-killing percentage (68.9%).

Edmonton desperately needs more from its defense. The Oilers’ goaltending duo has been awful, too, and Jack Campbell (1-4-0, 4.50 GAA, .837 SV%) was placed on waivers last Tuesday. Stuart Skinner is projected to patrol the crease Thursday in San Jose, and the 25-year-old netminder is 1-4-1 with a 3.99 GAA and a .856 save percentage this season.
