The Eastern Illinois Panthers and Central Michigan Chippewas face off on Sunday in a college basketball showdown at McGuirk Arena. When these two teams faced off last year it was Central Michigan that won by a point.
Eastern Illinois has been tested to start the season and they currently sit with an 0-2 record overall. In the first game they were defeated by Illinois 87-57 and in the last game, they lost to Illinois State 54-49. It’s clear the offense is going to be an issue for this team, and in this game they need to find a way to get the offense going here. The top player in the last game was Kinyon Hodges and he finished with 14 points and four rebounds. He was the only player in double figures though and that is going to need to be better here.
On the other side of this matchup is Central Michigan who opened up their season with a 97-73 defeat at the hands of the Marquette Golden Eagles. The offense was fine, but the defense couldn’t do anything to slow down the Golden Eagles offense. The top player for the Chippewas was Jesse Zaruela and he finished with 17 points and two assists. Guard Brian Taylor also had a big game finishing with 15 points and nine rebounds. The offense will need to be good, but even more important will be that the defense steps up and makes life tough on the Eastern Illinois offense.
