Detroit Tigers (70-80) vs. Los Angeles Dodgers (92-57)

The 2023 MLB season continues Wednesday, September 20, with the Detroit Tigers facing off against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the interleague battle at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, California, and the first pitch is set for 10:10 PM ET.

Detroit and LA wrap up a three-game series in California. The Dodgers took the opener 8-3, while the middle game has been excluded from this preview. The Boys in Blue are surefire -225 moneyline favorites for Wednesday’s closer, so let’s take a closer look.

The Detroit Tigers fell to 70-80 on the season following Monday’s defeat at Dodger Stadium. They put an end to a four-game winning streak, while Eduardo Rodriguez put on a disappointing performance, surrendering five earned runs on five hits and a walk across three innings of work. The Cats added to the scoreboard in the top of the fifth thanks to Jake Rogers’ three-run homer, but their bullpen yielded three more runs after that.

Detroit is slashing an underwhelming .237/.312/.371 with 17 extra-base hits and 14 home runs in the past two weeks and 447 at-bats. Their pitching staff has been solid during that span, posting a 3.57 ERA to go with a 1.12 WHIP and a .203 batting average against.

Reese Olson is proje cted to toe the rubber Wednesday in LA. The 24-year-old rookie right-hander is 4-7 with a serviceable 4.30 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, and 91/29 K/BB ratio in 16 starts and three relief appearances (92 innings pitched) this season. Olson has done a great job over his last four outings, allowing just four earned runs on 11 hits and nine walks while punching out 23 across 24 innings of work.
