Detroit has been consistently losing games throughout the season, including a stretch where it lost 14 out of 16 games during the first half of August. The Tigers responded by winning seven of their next 11 contests, but they have fallen back into a losing skid since then. They were swept by Seattle in the middle of last week before losing two out of three against Kansas City over the weekend. Detroit is now on a six-game road trip that wraps up with a rematch at Kansas City this coming weekend. The Tigers have the second-worst record in the American League, sitting 1.5 games ahead of Oakland for the worst record.

They have been a bad offensive team, ranked No. 26 with a batting average of .229. Shortstop Javy Baez leads the way with 104 hits, including a team-high 12 home runs. He will be facing a Los Angeles pitching staff that is No. 11 with an ERA of 3.80. Left-handed pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez is going to make the start for Detroit on Tuesday. He allowed five earned runs on six hits and two walks across four innings against Seattle last Thursday. Rodriguez allowed at least one earned run in three of his four innings. He had allowed one earned run across 11 innings since rejoining the active roster on Aug. 21, so his ERA ballooned to 4.17 across 54 innings overall this year.
