The Detroit Tigers have been absolutely brutal to begin the season as they are 1-3 and were able to pick up a win in extras against these Houston Astros last night. Young righty Matt Manning will get the ball for his first start of the season and is looking to get more innings at the MLB level.
The Houston Astros have been starting off a tough level as they are currently 2-3 so far as they are on a two -game losing streak after a 7-6 11-inning home loss last night. They are handing the ball to their southpaw ace Framber Valdez as he made the Opening Day start where he did not factor into the decision against the Chicago White Sox as he went five innings and gave up zero runs on six hits with a hit by pitch and four strikeouts.
The Detroit Tigers have been absolutely brutal on the offensive side of things as they are last in the spot with a .491 team OPS while scoring 2.5 runs per game so far. Center fielder Riley Greene is doing decently well as he has a .694 OPS with a home run, one RBI, two runs scored, and a 2:5 walk-to-strikeout ratio. If they can figure out how to step up and get a few hits together like they did last night, it will be a great spot for Detroit to surprise a lot of people.
Framber Valdez is expected to do well this season when looking at his Baseball Savant career numbers as he has a 5.7 barrel percentage, 90 MPH average exit velocity, 22.9 strikeout percentage, and a 41.8 hard hit percentage. Valdez has a four-pitch arsenal (sinker, curveball, changeup, cutter) and hitters were 4-for-15 against his sinker with three strik eouts. He faced the Tigers twice a year ago and went 1-0 in 15 innings and allowed two runs on 15 hits with two walks and 15 strikeouts.
