The Detroit Red Wings travel to New Jersey to face the Devils with both teams looking to start strong in the Eastern Conference. The Red Wings are looking to take a big step forward in this year and start the season 2-0 while the Devils look to rebound from a difficult opening night loss. Both teams are hoping to prove that their rebuilds are over and make a statement early on in the season that they are ready to compete in the Eastern Conference.
The Red Wings are hoping to have a big year in the Atlantic Division and kicked off the season strong with a three-goal performance in their opening night win. Michael Rasmussen scored a goal and added two assists while Dylan Larkin added an assist to the top line but the rest of the offense also stepped up. Elmer Soderblom, Andrew Copp, and Oskar Sundqvist combined for a goal and three assists while defenseman Olli Maatta added a goal to bring a spark to the offense from the blue line.
The offense looked great in the opening night win but the defense carried the Red Wings, putting together a shutout and they hope to prove that last year's awful defense, which allowed 3.78 goals per game is behind them. Moritz Seider and Olli Maatta led the top two pairings but the entire unit stepped up with Filip Hronek, Ben Chairot, and the rest of the defense creating turnovers in the defensive zone and limi ting the shots on the net. The hope is that in the second game of a back-to-back Alex Nedeljkovic can step up in the net as he had a .901 save percentage, and a 3.31 goals-against average on 1796 shots last season.
