A pair of Eastern Conference teams that missed the postseason last year take the ice in search of a win in the Buckeye State. The Detroit Red Wings are on the road as they make the short road trip to take on the Columbus Blue Jackets Monday night. Detroit skates in off a 6-4 home win over Tampa Bay Saturday night in their previous contest. Columbus upended the Rangers 5-3 at home in their most recent contest Saturday night. In the last 10 meetings between the teams, the Red Wings own a 5-2-3 advantage though it was the Blue Jackets picking up a 4-3 win on the road in the most recent meeting January 14.

Detroit bounced back from a season opening loss on the road to the Devils by dropping the Lightning in their home opener Saturday night. The Red Wings evened their record at 1-1-0 on the season and stand tied for fourth in the Atlantic Division, two points behind Boston and Toronto for the top spot. Detroit is tied for 4th in the league in goals per game as they average 4.50 goals a night this season. The Red Wings are tied for 21st in the league in goals against as they allow an average of four goals a game. Detroit is 4th in the league in power play success as they cash in on 40% of their chances with the man advantage this season. The Red Wings are tied for 21st in the league in penalty killing as they successfully get through 75% of their shorthanded situations on the year.

Against Tampa Bay, Detroit got their offense going and that proved to offset th eir defensive deficiencies to earn the victory. The Red Wings held a 14-10 edge in shots on goal in the opening period and skated off tied at two at the first intermission. Daniel Sprong opened the scoring with his first goal of the season at 5:11 off an assist from Alex DeBrincat. After giving up two straight goals to trail in the game, DeBrincat netted the equalizer with his second goal of the season at 14:35 off an assist from Shayne Gostisbehere. In the second period, Detroit owned a commanding 21-7 advantage in shots on goal and outscored Tampa Bay 2-1 to take a 4-3 lead at the second intermission. Lucas Raymond gave Detroit a 3-2 lead with his first goal of the season, unassisted, at 2:01 of the stanza. After Tampa Bay tied the game at three, J.T. Compher gave the Red Wings a 4-3 advantage with his first goal of the season at 15:23 of the period off assists from Moritz Seider and Andrew Copp. In the third period, Detroit was outshot 8-7 but outscored Tampa Bay 2-1 to earn the victory. DeBrincat gave Detroit a 5-3 lead with his third goal of the season at 4:44 off an assist from Dylan Larkin. After the Lightning closed the gap to a goal, Seider closed the scoring with an empty net tally, his first of the year, at 19:59 off an assist from Compher. Ville Husso made 21 saves for the Red Wings, who held a 42-25 advantage in shots on goal, in the victory. He is expected to be between the pipes for this contest.
