Detroit opened its preseason schedule with a 27-23 loss last Friday at home to the Atlanta Falcons. Detroit starting quarterback Jared Goff played only the opening series of the game but led the Lions to a touchdown on a 9-yard run by running back D'Andre Swift. Golf pass for 47 yards.

Starting wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown caught two passes for 29 yards in the opening drive. Goff is on the hot seat as the quarterback must prove his worth in order to have a long-term future with the Lions. Detroit's talented offensive line is expected to provide Goff with a great deal of pass protection and open holes for Swift during the regular season. Detroit continues to be winless in the preseason since August of 2018.

Indianapolis opened its preseason schedule with a 27-24 loss to the Buffalo Bills after being outscored in the final quarter 17-8. Indianapolis gave plenty of playing time to new starting quarterback Matt Ryan, who played the first four possessions. Jonathan Taylor, the leading rusher from last season for the Colts did not play. Matt Ryan's led offense scored just three points despite several opportunities thanks to early turnovers forced by the Indianapolis defense.

Ryan passed for 58 yards with his longest completion of 17 yards to Michael Pittman Jr.' On defense, Indianapolis forced Buffalo into five turnovers which has become commonplace for the Colts as last season Indianapolis finished second in takeaways with 33. However, a lack of offense in part by Matt Ryan and by Colts' backups was not able to take advantage of field position following the turnovers.
