A pair of AFC opponents in different situations after the first two weeks of the season lock up in search of a win down in South Beach. The Denver Broncos are on the road as they make the cross-country trek to take on the Miami Dolphins Sunday afternoon. Denver let a first half lead slip away as they were beaten 35-33 at home by Washington last Sunday in their previous contest, losing outright as a 3.5-point favorite. Miami knocked off New England on the road, 24-17, last Sunday night, covering the line as a one-point favorite. In the all-time regular season series between the teams, the Dolphins own a 12-6-1 advantage but the Broncos have taken three of the last four matchups. That includes a 20-13 home win in the most recent matchup on November 22, 2020.

Denver got off to a hot start but fell apart in the second half against Washington, sending them to a defeat in heartbreaking fashion. The Broncos dropped to 0-2 on the season with their two defeats coming by a combined three points. Against Washington, Denver rolled to a 21-3 lead in the second quarter only to give up 11 points in the final 1:47 of the first half to narrow the margin to seven. The Broncos led 24-21 after three quarters before giving up a pair of touchdowns to the Commanders to trail 35-24 with 7:11 to play. Denver kicked a field goal with 1:50 to go to climb within eight and made it a two-point game on an improbable Hail Mary as time expired in regulation. The Broncos went for two on the ensuing conversion only to come up empty, leaving them on the short end of the scoreboard. Denver held a 399-388 edge in total offense in the game though they were beaten 26-21 in first downs and by a 33:45 to 26:15 margin in time of posse ssion. For good measure, the Broncos committed the lone two turnovers in the game.

The Broncos enter this game 12th in the league in passing offense with an average of 221.5 yards per game through the air and they stand 15th in rushing offense by putting up 108 yards per contest. Denver is 14th in scoring offense with an average of 24.5 points per game while they are 23rd in scoring defense by allowing an average of 26 points a contest. Russell Wilson is 45 of 66 passing for 485 yards with five touchdowns against one interception. He has been sacked nine times while adding 57 yards on the ground. Javonte Williams leads the team with 25 carries for 96 yards this season. Samaje Perine (nine carries, 45 yards) is the second back in the system for the Broncos. Courtland Sutton leads the team with nine receptions for 98 yards and a score this season. Perine (seven receptions, 57 yards), Marvin Mims Jr. (four grabs, team-high 122 yards, TD) and Brandon Johnson (four receptions, 97 yards, two TD) are solid options in the passing game. Wil Lutz is four of five on extra points and three of four on field goal attempts with a long of 32 this season.

Linebacker Frank Clark (hip), nose tackle Mike Purcell (ankle) and safety Justin Simmons (hip) each missed practice Wednesday and Thursday. Watch for updates on their statuses leading toward kickoff.
