The Columbus Blue Jackets are on the road as they take on the Washington Capitals Saturday night. Columbus was in action at home against Tampa Bay Thursday night in their previous contest and rallied for a 4-2 victory. Washington was at home against the Islanders in their previous game Thursday night, getting blanked 3-0 to snap their three-game win streak. In the last 10 meetings, the Capitals own a 7-2-1 advantage though it was the Blue Jackets winning 7-6 in overtime on the road in the most recent matchup on March 21, 2023.

Columbus was in action against Tampa Bay at home Thursday night in their most recent contest to snap a four-game slide. The Blue Jackets entered Friday 4-4-2, leaving them fifth in the Metropolitan Division, six points behind the Rangers for the top spot. Columbus is tied for 23rd in goals per game as they score an average of 2.70 goals per game. The Blue Jackets are tied for 19th in goals against as they surrender an average of 3.20 goals per contest. Columbus is 24th in power play success as they have converted 14.3% of their chances with the man advantage. The Blue Jackets are 9th in the league in penalty killing by successfully working through 85.3% of their shorthanded situations on the year.

Against Tampa Bay, Columbus started strong, hit a lull in the middle of the game and finished hot to earn the win on home ice. The Blue Jackets saw the shots eve n at 11 in the opening period but skated off with a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes of play. Kirill Marchenko opened the scoring with his first goal of the season at 6:29 off assists from Dmitri Voronkov and Cole Sillinger. In the second period, the Blue Jackets were outshot 12-5 and outscored 2-0 to trail 2-1 at the second intermission. The third period saw Columbus hold a 12-6 edge in shots on goal and outscored Tampa Bay 3-0 to earn the win. Boone Jenner knotted the game with his fifth goal of the season at 6:41 with assists going to Zach Werenski and Damon Severson. Erik Gudbranson gave the Blue Jackets a 3-2 lead they wouldn’t relinquish with his first goal of the year at 9:24 off assists from Emil Bernstrom and Adam Fantilli. Johnny Gaudreau closed the scoring with his first goal of the season at 17:49 into an empty net with assists going to Ivan Provorov and Jenner. Elvis Merzlikins made 27 saves for the Blue Jackets, who were outshot 29-28, in the victory. He is expected to be between the pipes again here.
