Columbus Blue Jackets vs. New Jersey Devils Prediction, Preview, and Odds – 4-6-2023

A pair of Metropolitan Division teams on opposite ends of the standings take the ice looking for a win in the Garden State. The Columbus Blue Jackets are on the road as they travel to face the New Jersey Devils Thursday night. Columbus comes in off a 4-2 road loss to Toronto Tuesday night in their previous contest. New Jersey rolled past Pittsburgh Tuesday night by a 5-1 margin in their previous game. In the last 10 meetings between the teams, the Blue Jackets own a 6-3-1 advantage but the Devils have won both meetings this season, including a 3-2 road win on February 14 in the most recent meeting.

Columbus lost for the fifth time in six games as they were doubled up on the road by Toronto in their previous game Tuesday night. The Blue Jackets entered Wednesday 24-45-8 and in the basement of the Metropolitan Division, 53 points behind the division-leading Hurricanes. They are one of the four teams in the Eastern Conference to be eliminated from playoff contention. Columbus is 30th in goals per game as they put up an average of 2.58 goals per contest. The Blue Jackets are 31st in the league in goals against as they allow an average of 3.96 goals a game this season. Columbus is 25th in the league in power play success as they cash in 18.7% of their chances with the man advantage this season. The Blue Jackets are tied for 22nd in penalty killing as they successfully get through 76.1% of their shorthanded situations on the year.

Against Toronto, Columbus hung around in the game but they were unable to put the game in the win column as they spent much of the game in their own end of the ice. The opening period saw the Blue Jackets outshot by a 16-5 margin but they were fortunate to skate off even at one after 20 minutes of play. After falling behind 1-0, Columbus tied the game with Jack Roslovic’s 11th goal of the season at 12:22 off assists from Kent Johnson and Liam Foudy. In the second period, the Blue Jackets were outshot 17-12 and outscored 1-0 to trail 2-1 at the second intermission. The third period saw Columbus outshot 17-9 and outscored 2-1 to end up on the wrong end of the scoreboard. After giving up a goal to trail 3-1, the Blue Jackets drew within one with Eric Robinson’s 12th goal of the year, unassisted, at 12:03 but that was as close as they would get. Columbus allowed an empty-net goal to close the scoring and seal their fate. Jet Greaves made 46 saves in his NHL debut for the Blue Jackets, who were outshot 50-26, in the loss. Michael Hutchinson is expected to get the start between the pipes here.
